I have a HKS SSQV Black Edition Blow-Off Valve on my setup. I was told it was new when I bought it, so I'm assuming all works fine. After a full boost run (only 8-14 psi), it blows off and I can hear it. At low boost and lower rpms, it sounds like there is compressor surge. But I was told it could also be wastegate flutter (Synapse 40mm wastegate). How do I tell the difference? How can I set my BOV up better to blow off at lower boosts (this is the newer one where you aren't supposed to be able to adjust it).
You're probably experiencing wastegate chatter. Different wastegates give off difference sounds at different volumes. There should be no reason to adjust anything on your BOV. It is designed to realease pressure over all. I would suggest visiting your local tuner and having them help you out. If it is a big deal, I'd get a re-routed discharge line that connects to your intake. Less noise, and you can get a valve that realeases low boost levels easier. It won't sound "cool" but recirculated discharge gas is more efficient than a BOV and actually allows for less loss in boost between gear change. If you had compressor surge, it would be very loud and evident. Compressor surge sounds like a raspy turkey gobble that lasts noticeably longer than any BOV discharge.
